What Building Erection Services Actually Involve
Building erection is the physical assembly of a steel structure on your site, everything that happens after the frame is engineered and fabricated and before the building is weathertight and ready to use. The steps, in order
Site and foundation work. Before any steel goes up, the pad or slab needs to be graded, formed, and poured with anchor bolts set to the exact layout the engineered drawings call for. Get this wrong by even an inch and the columns won't line up later.
Receiving and staging. Steel arrives from the fabricator cut, punched, and marked for its position in the building. A good crew inventories it against the shipping list before anything is lifted, because a missing or mismarked piece found mid-erection stalls the whole job.
Setting the frame. Columns go up first, plumbed and braced, then rafters or trusses connect them. On anything beyond a small carport, this means a crane or boom truck and a crew working at height. Bolted connections have to be torqued to spec, not just snugged down, since the whole structure's strength depends on those joints.
Girts and purlins. These are the secondary members that run between the main frame and give the roof and walls something to fasten to. Spacing and fastening here directly affects how the panels perform in wind.
Roofing and siding. Metal panels go on next, run and lapped correctly so water sheds the way it's supposed to. This is also where trim, flashing, and sealant around penetrations and openings get done, the part that determines whether a building actually stays dry.
Doors, windows, and closeout. Man doors, overhead doors, and any window openings get framed and trimmed, gutters and downspouts go on if specified, and the site gets cleaned of scrap and packaging.
Why this isn't a DIY-friendly trade
Pre-engineered steel buildings are sold as kits, and the marketing makes assembly sound simple. In practice, erection involves working at height, running a crane or lift safely, hitting torque specs on structural bolts, and reading engineered drawings correctly enough that the finished building actually carries the loads it was designed for. A frame that's out of plumb or under-torqued doesn't usually fail on day one, it fails under snow load or wind years later. That's the argument for a crew that erects buildings for a living rather than a general contractor doing it as a side job.
What affects how long it takes
Three things move the timeline more than anything else: the size and complexity of the building, how easily a crane and delivery trucks can access the site, and weather. A simple carport goes up fast. A large shop or building with multiple bays, insulation, and finished interior work takes longer, and any structure has to wait out high wind or lightning before crews will work at height. A contractor who's walked your site can give you a real answer here, one based on your access and your building, not a generic number.
Erection versus the rest of the project
It's worth keeping erection separate in your head from design and engineering, which is the drawings and load calculations that happen before steel is ever ordered, and from foundation work, which some erectors handle and some don't. Ask directly what's included in a quote. "Erection" by itself may or may not cover the concrete pad, and that's a real cost gap to find out about after you've already signed.
