Red Iron or Tube Steel: Which Frame Your Building Actually Needs

The frame decision comes down to one number: how far you need to span without a post in the middle.

Everything else, the cost, the foundation, the permit process, the lifespan, follows from that. Get the span right and the rest of the choice makes itself.

What the two things are

Red iron is structural steel, hot-rolled I-beams and wide-flange sections, shipped with the red oxide primer that gives it the name. Columns and rafters are engineered as a system, bolted together at the connections, and anchored into a concrete foundation. This is what people mean by a pre-engineered metal building.

Tube steel is square or rectangular hollow tubing, typically welded rather than bolted, in gauges like 14 or 12. It is what most carports, small shops, and open equipment covers are built from.

They are both steel and they are not close to being the same product.

Span is the dividing line

Tube steel is efficient at modest spans. Up to somewhere in the 20 to 40 foot range, depending on gauge, spacing, and load, a tube frame is a sensible and economical structure. Push it further and you are either adding interior posts or adding so much steel that you have given away the cost advantage.

Red iron is engineered for clear span. Sixty, eighty, a hundred feet and beyond with nothing in the middle is routine. If you need an open floor, a truck to turn around inside, a crane rail, or a column-free shop bay, this is the answer and tube steel is not a substitute.

So the honest first question is: what has to fit inside, and can a post stand where you would put one? A 30 by 40 equipment shed with a post at the midpoint is fine. A 60-foot shop where the post lands in the middle of the work floor is not.

The engineered stamp, and why it decides more than you think

Tube-frame buildings come in two versions, and the difference matters enormously if you need a permit.

A certified unit is engineered and stamped to the wind and snow loads for your specific location. A non-certified unit is not. The second is cheaper, and it will not pass a permit review anywhere that requires stamped drawings. It also may not satisfy your insurer, and it will complicate a future sale of the property.

In Northwest Arkansas the requirement varies by jurisdiction and by what the building is for. An agricultural structure on acreage outside city limits is treated differently from a commercial building in Springdale or Rogers, and different again from something on a residential lot in Bentonville or Fayetteville. Find out which applies before you price anything, because a non-certified quote and a certified quote are not comparable numbers and putting them side by side will lead you to the wrong decision.

Red iron buildings are engineered and stamped as a matter of course. That is part of what you are paying for.

Loads in Northwest Arkansas

Two loads drive the design here.

Wind is the governing load most of the time. Arkansas sits where it does, the design wind speeds are not trivial, and the failures we see on cheap open-sided structures are almost always uplift, the roof trying to leave rather than the frame trying to crush. Uplift is resisted at the anchor bolts and the foundation, which is why the concrete matters as much as the steel.

Snow is a lighter load here than further north, but it is not zero, and it is not the number to guess at. It also interacts with roof pitch and with drift where a lower roof meets a taller wall.

If a supplier cannot tell you the wind speed and ground snow load their building was engineered for, they have not engineered it.

The foundation is part of the building

This is where budgets go wrong.

A red iron building transfers substantial concentrated load and uplift into isolated footings and anchor bolts. Those footings are sized by the engineer, they are often deeper and heavier than people expect, and they are poured to a specific bolt layout with a real tolerance. Get the anchor bolts out of position and the steel does not go together.

A tube-frame building on a slab is simpler, but "simpler" still means a slab thick enough at the perimeter and anchors rated for uplift. Setting a tube frame on a thin, unreinforced slab with wedge anchors is the most common corner cut in the business and it is exactly what fails in a straight-line wind event.

When you compare quotes, confirm whether the concrete is in or out. It is frequently out, and it is frequently a large number.

If you are going to insulate and condition it

This changes the recommendation.

A conditioned shop, an office, a climate-controlled storage building, anything you intend to heat and cool, is better served by red iron. The deeper frame gives you room for real insulation depth, the girt and purlin system gives you something to attach interior finish to, and the bolted structure handles the added dead load of insulation and lining without argument.

It also matters because of condensation. Steel is a conductor. In an uninsulated metal building, the underside of the roof reaches dew point on a cold morning and rains on whatever is stored below it. Anyone who has walked into an unlined shop in October has seen this. Controlling it requires either a vapor barrier and insulation assembly designed for the purpose, or accepting that the building is for things that do not mind getting wet.

Deciding this up front is much cheaper than retrofitting.

Lifespan and repairability

Both will last a long time if the coating is maintained and the base of the columns stays out of standing water. Corrosion on either system starts at the ground line and at any place water is trapped.

Red iron is repairable and modifiable more or less indefinitely. You can add a bay, cut in a door, hang a hoist, or reinforce a member, all of which are ordinary structural work.

Tube frames are welded assemblies, and modifying one properly means welding on a structural member, which is a different proposition from bolting to an I-beam. Adding to one later is often more trouble than it was worth to save at the start.

How the choice usually falls

Tube steel for carports, equipment covers, open-sided hay and machine storage, small workshops with modest spans, and anything where you accept interior posts. Get it certified if a permit is involved, and do not go below the gauge the engineer specifies to save money.

Red iron for clear spans past roughly 40 feet, anything commercial, anything you will insulate and condition, anything with heavy interior loads or a crane, and anything you intend to expand later.

The mistake worth avoiding is buying tube steel for a job that needed red iron because the initial quote was smaller. The corrective work costs more than the difference did.
